Meet the owner

For dinner we ordered Caesar Salad .. a simple dish, uncomplicated and always served with a mounting of anchovies, of which there were none on either of our plates.

The waiter was asked why not and he relayed our enquiry into the kitchen whereupon an angry little man erupted from his ovens, approached our table and lifted both my dinner and fork and plumbed it for the depths of what appeared to be missing.

I asked him to go away.

Yet he dug deeper into my dinner, looking for small fish .. unsuccessfully.

Again, I asked him to go away. He didn’t.

‘ I am the owner of this restaurant’  he postulated, and my response was, lucky for him, reasonable ..

Yet he didn’t leave off and did neither any of his staff, all of whom gathered around and chuckled loudly as my wife and I climbed the stairs to the lobby .. both hungry, both of us bereft of a simple dinner. How they laughed..

We left…

Our salads uneaten. our appetites unsatisfied.

Try being over 80 when everybody else is under 30.

Had a look at the restaurant website wanting to see the angry little man, thinking Danny Devito type of guy. But weirdly no human photos, heaps of food, though no anchovies. Usually good restauranteurs (think Rick Stein) are proud of their staff and themselves and show them off.

Doesn’t Rick Stein have a restaurant around there? Now thats the meal I would love to have, you and your wife, with Rick Stein just happening to be at his restaurant, his mate Jimmy Barnes that is known to frequent Ricks places, maybe an old surfer or two (you included), Tim Winton as well to make it perfect.

I would pay for it to (jeez, I have said it now), I have a lump sum from being pricked and prodded at my clinical trial, though there is the two standard drink thing I have to stick to which would be a bugger.

But at least with Rick Stein you would definitely have anchovies!!!

That’s why it’s called a Caesar salad: dished up by right little caesars.
