our high ground
We subjugated. We overcame. We killed. We justified. We rewrote history. We ignored the consequences of our murderous colonial actions. We became hardened. We elected men and women of little understanding. We wrote a constitution that excluded anyone of colour, our earliest hope was that Australia would eventually become a nation of whites.
We lorded it over the dispossessed. We instituted foreign laws over a country notwithstanding that they had their own for over thousands of years.
We cheer and sing to an anthem written by a Scotsman first performed in Australia in 1878.
We cast not a singular look at the old black man who crouches by the side of of the road outside Woolworths, not quite begging, skinny, dirty and hungry .. defeated.
What of his parents, his grandparents? His tribe?
We live in his land, this orphan of history.
Well put Pete. It’s a tough one for modern day descendants of the old British Empire. I’m not I can comment adequately beyond that.
Some of these poor ragged dispossessed have more dignity that we could ever muster.
