tom carroll cutting back

When the nugget was a kid terrorising everbody north of Long Reef he would practice his cutbacks all day – and in those early days he didn’t realise the pivot benefits of coming around the backhand corner with all the knees bent and the backside lowered to a squat – but that didn’t mean he couldn’t assassinate moving water. The little bugger would never slow down, still doesn’t.
Everybloodything wrong here; windmill arms, back leg locked out of position and all but weightless, front leg no longer steering, leading hand grabbing deep water for both deceleration and an aid to balance – The kid has completely stuffed it, he’s probably paddled out into the middle of a local comp that he wasn’t invited to and decided to chuck a few heavy swathes.
– and a couple of deep speed trails.
No way this manoeuvre was on the scoresheets back then.
Nice one Pete.
Here’s one of my faves – Col Smith in sequence at smoking North Narra.
Must be on a single fin and almost definitely a channel bottom. Out of the pit, then way out on the face, glides through a searing, wide arc cutty, foam bounce, back into the pit.
Beeyoutiful.
And New Years cheers to you…
Well, fuck, that didn’t work. S’posed to be an image or a link in that post.
Kinda lost the moment now…
But here it is anyway (I hope): http://s114.photobucket.com/albums/n245/stunet/?action=view¤t=KMColour243.jpg
I got into his way once out there, paddling out, and he just lifted his board over me somehow – you know what it’s like when you expect the sensation of a deep laceration over your back?
Never happened, Smith was a very focused fellow. (and back at ya Stu)
Hey Pete
The name Col Smith conjured a memory, help an old man out here….. The Coke at No Narra had Blair and Col in the final???? All I remember is epic Narra… Simon? Was it Lynch? ’78 or ’79, tube duel in well overhead, perfect lefts.
Tom Carroll’s picture is a study in ugly surfing.
there were two col smiths Mike – both well matched – the epic final at narra was between blair and lynch – 1978 – if I’m wrong here stu will catch me.
the newcastle col smith copped his final orders some years go, guy was a BIG smoker, gave some good advice on his way out – well respected fellow.
You’re right Pete, there were two Col Smiths – Narrabeen and Newcastle. And yeah, ’78 Surfabout final was between Larry Blair and Wayne Lynch in pumping lefts. It went down at North Steyne however, not Narra. Blair got him with a long one. Must’ve been nigh on ten seconds.
Footage of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahs7u09I-8E
This what you were thinking of Mike?
Might tone the hyperbole down a shade. Barrel was about five secs, not ten.
Watch up to 3:30 for a great ‘out the back’ chat with Nat Young. Whatever happened to the mid heat interview?
Yeah, and I think Col was in the quarters…. we were visiting family in Melb and I was begging my mom to go to Sydney for the comp, even vaguely remember it being on TV at my cousins… who did not surf. Wow, did they have a beach house though, Johanna I think. Thanks stu and Pete
Stu, they do in heat interviews now….. and miss live waves to do so. The ASP must not have a director for the telecasts. Most scoring waves are shown as replays.

PB…. you mean the advice Billabong obstructs while “branding” Andy’s image? Terrible opportunity lost, the ultimate public service message.
fair enough mike, what we were then we are no longer – but no one listened to surfers in those early days.
plus – I’ve been trying to get a smith pic (newcastle smith) for this exercise – he was known to be able to rip a few off in his time, him and whatsisname who used to get out a lot at black rock – terry richardson (?)
I’ve got a killer cutback shot shot of Richo on the cover of Deep, Nude Nut Carroll’s old rag. I’d shoot it over to you Pete but I’ve got a few relationship issues happening here. I only use a Mac and my scanner is in a monogamous relationship with my PC except they’re not talking at the moment.
When the computer love returns I’ll scan and send.
ok stu, the way I see it is that this means we are married … ?
I need that pic mate, or it’s over
Good cutty? There is a shot of Stuart Cadden, long time ago, in ASW…. beautiful figure 8, flawless. Narra I think. Still remember his name, though not sure I ever read it again.
