Warriewood is a Sydney beach a mile north of Narrabeen and a hundred yards inshore from an very large offshore ocean sewerage outlet / outflow. A grand favour to the voters from some vengeful government whose ministers have long since succumbed to immense wealth and impoverished health.
Dooma is a Warriewood man, Dooma . Damien is Dooma.
Christian Fletcher had some unkind things to say about Dooma during one of the Hawaiian seasons. He reckoned our man didn’t deserve a world title until he jumped some air at 25′ Pipe. This was just a little chest-pumping that’s all. He’s an American (is) Christian and he backs himself in every race he runs.
Here’s a pic* of CF and the late A.Irons tuning into some finger food. This could be one of professional surfing’s seminal images except that Fletch has the wrong two fingers giving a bird and AI – rock him – has taken the gesture even further.
This takes style.

the antithesis to Damien was Christian.
Like Parsons before him, we all acknowleged his success, but no one wanted to surf like Snips…. everyone wanted to surf like Andino, the archy.
But alas Peter, it was your contest clowns (bronzed aussies) that infected our landscape and promoted good clean surfers like Parsons, Mauro and the rest of the Stepfords that shied from the lip. Homogeny in red white and blue tracksuits.
We gave you Mc Donalds and KFC, so lets call it even shall we?
geez hip, haven’t I apologised for those blokes yet? .. not an illuminating moment in the wide world of surf was seeing those three stooges selling an image created by a bunch of girls in a frock shop –
let’s not get too hypnotized by imagery..I seem to remember Hardman flipping around during a duck dive at Narrabeen in order to pop up in the soup behind Tom Carrol, thus handing Carrol an interference call and resultant ticket out of the contest (the Coke?).

If so, good on Domma.
As for your aSP reference, once you “contain surfing within painted lines”, you allow those less possessing of talent to operate within the rules and create a way to paint themselves as relevant that freedom would expose.
Examples? PT won a tour without winning an event and with far less than top 10 talent. The network of his NSSA was predicated on that failed success, gamemanship and “points” over dominant surfing.
Why humans implore competition upon art is unfathomable. Money sells the “results” and a future never realizes that it never had to submit to standards that have none.
