The Zone of Interest.
I was reminded of this image today when I read of the attacks on Synagogues and Jewish homes in Dover Heights, Vaucluse, Rose Bay and Woollahra .. my youthful turf, in that we spent a lot of time drinking at the Golden Sheaf, the Royal Oak and the Watsons Bay Hotel.
The image is of Rudolph Hoss’s bedroom, the camp commandant. The view is of the killing factories at Auschwitz. His wife enjoyed staying at the extermination camp, saying she had a lovely garden but the smell drifting in from the ovens was sometimes unsettling. She bought up five young children during the time.

The Zone of Interest is an award winning movie made in 2023 and considered by some to be almost unwatchable, it is based on a 2014 novel by Martin Amis.
