Predict: to say or estimate that (a specified thing) will happen in the future or will be a consequence of something.

John McConaghy looked at me over the table, as did his two project managers, the floor foreman and the company auditor. I was the interviewee and they were the interviewers .. the job was for the accountant for Australia’s premier racing sailboat builders. And here’s one of me and there’s five of them batting questions at me about basically one thing .. Where do you think this company might be in 12 months?

Which meant I had to (1) read the latest balance sheet and (2) predict the next twelve months business plan.

Now in order to gain currency it should be noted that my qualifications into this world of high seagoing commerce was gained at Seaforth Tech .. three nights a week for over five years .. my Certificate of Accounting Procedures handed over to light applause at the Mosman Town Hall on a weekday night, mum and dad foremost.

Mr Phillip Lowe holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.Comm (Honours) in Economics/Econometrics from the University of New South Wales. He has authored numerous papers, including on the linkages between monetary policy and financial stability. He commenced as Governor on 18 September 2016.

He is Chair of the Reserve Bank Board and Payments System Board, and Chair of the Council of Financial Regulators. He is a member of the Financial Stability Board. Prior to his current role, he held the positions of Deputy Governor, Assistant Governor (Economic) and Assistant Governor (Financial System). He also spent two years at the Bank for International Settlements working on financial stability issues.

Mr Lowe is Chair of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children and a director of The Anika Foundation. He is also Chair of the Committee on the Global Financial System of the Bank for International Settlements.

Mt Lowe is on record as saying : None of us can predict the future and we have had to make decisions under great uncertainty and with incomplete information. 

Well, all I can say to Mr Phillip Lowe is to try and score a job with a boatbuilder with that attitude ..

She almost laughed at me, this lovely girl, thinking a TAFE accounting certificate might result in the possibility at getting the job with the company of Chartered Accountants she represented: her long legs crossed, her attention elsewhere, my resume lying on her desk unread, younger, better dressed men in and out of her sight.
