Shane Fisher – The man who stayed on ..

Shane Fisher has been around for as long as I’ve been writing, first appearing as a regular commentator on the Kurungabaa magazine site .. an  enterprise weighted down by well intentioned surf related esoterica .. Shane though persisted, sometimes attempting to have his dozen or so comments posted every night. The trash bucket was never busier but his literary spark has never been extinguished.

He is still posting multiple comments and now he’s here, has been for some years. Shane writes them in large batches and usually on weekend nights because like me he has a great fancy for a glass or five when the work week is over.

Shane knows it, I know it .. he’s a writer manifestly hobbled by his self-imposed circumstances and it’s my job to convince him that these impediments are what will produce the words straining to emerge from his conscience. He knows what it is like to be a believer of ‘the discipline of observance’  (his words) .. and now he has a grandson. A little man ready to accept everything his grandfather might tell him about life. Its betrayals and rewards. Sometimes with these little folk all you need do is watch, and protect,

I was lucky with my grandsons and spent a lot of time with them when they were small fry .. took them everywhere, the beaches and jetties, the coastal scrub .. sometimes they’d come back with all their pockets loaded with stones, special stones, then we would play music and pretend to be rockstars.

Days without end.

A writer hobbled by his self imposed circumstances. I remember writing something in primary school. The teacher looked at it and said in an off hand way and gave it back to me.

It wasn’t in a offhand way. It was in an surprising manner. Nothing more, nothing less. No one told me different and I didn’t know better. My mates said I made them laugh. So you go and live life. I was the man who stayed on, last man standing mostly, no matter what had been induced, looking at the Stars then the morning Sun, wondering.

I find it funny that surfing led me astray, which is not hard, led me to people that I admire and are fascinated by.

Pete always hounded me and I mean hounded in a good way. I wish he was that teacher way back when.
