Scotty built me half a dozen boards back in the day, from balsa to foam. Forty years on someone pointed him here and he sent me the odd email from time to time ….. here are a couple.

Hi Scott Dillon here..Have been there done that..I also had a boxer,and a rottweiller.BUT they did what I told him..I am not interested in people who can’t understand a dog..Face them,show no fear..They know their bounderies.It’s all bluff.To show fear against anything is not on.I have often asked people,mostly girls who come into my Surf Museum, what would they do if an Alsatian, a Boxer or Rottweller came into the Museum..and stood there teeth bared…WHAT WOULD THEY DO..Everyone,and I mean everyone said..Run as fast as I could away.WRONG>>>You would not get ten feet,before they had you..Face them,show no fear..It is BLUFF..Take this thought all through your life.
Ps.I am off to Hawaii on Sunday for two weeks of dancing,surfing,and maybe sex. Call me in two weeks.Scott.

He was a boxer, surfer , character and a lair. A big wave rider who, like his mates Mayes, Magoo, Ross etc was a teacher to the “ Gremlins ” at the famous South Bondi school. Over 60 odd years on the pupils still remember those teachers fondly.
A sad day Pete. Characters like Scotty were true Bondi People and the ranks are thinning. Scotty was one of the real pioneers. That tin shed site up in Wellington Place should be a Bondi Heritage Landmark . Likewise where the old South Bondi Surf Board Riders Club stood. These places and people were the real Bondi. That’s why it’s such an emotional time when the
“ South Bondi School teachers “ pass on.

Scott was the Headmaster. Mayes constantly disqualified his admission to the upper levels by spending too much time at Tamarama and Magoo frightened all the young ladies away when he started to suck string into one nostril and expel it from the other .. and we all suspected Wheels kept a few sachets of Napro in his Qantas bag.

Sorry to hear about Scotty. Another old timer bites the dust, one more gone, a shame. Think I first remember him when he hit the front page of the Telegraph surfing Bear Island, I think it was him. Last saw him up the coast at his museum, we shot the shit, relived memories of the old days with mutual friends. I said I’d like to go inside, to check out the museum, he charged me! Guess that’s the way goes. Still…he was one of the last of the original Aussie big wave riders, he will live on in our memories. Aloha Scott, you were one of a kind.
Sad to hear about Scott.He made my 2nd board my 1st i bought of Dooley I think it ha Cocacola scribed on the top
It was hard to go to wllo school cos we had to go past wello lane so Scott and Noel used to say Voodoo is working lets go.So u see we were not much at school

IF,I REMBER ,I THINK IT WAS THE TIME THAT SCOTT,CLIMBED ON TO THE SEALING TO POUR 2 CANS OF PAINT,ON A BOARD LAYING ON A TABLE,8,FEET BELOW TO SEE IF A NEW LOOK ON BOARDS,COULD BE POPULAR TO THE GUYS,I OBTAINED,1 WISH I DIDNT,
I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE GUYS MAKING FUN OF THE ART WORK,THAT NOEL AND SCOTT CAME UP WITH,BUT NEVER THE LESS I DONT KNOW IF I SOLD IT ,OR LEFT IT IN SOMEONES GARAGE ,WHEN THEY WERE NOT LOOKING,.

I saw a board, it had length, it was going out to the ocean., We called to him, but he kept on going.
Talk about survivors….just received a Christmas phone call from the grand daughter of Vic “the Rat” Hogan. Vic’s an original old Bondi boy! And do I mean old, he turned 100 in November! I called him back via Face Time, he looked great and we had a fun mag. He’s gotta be the last of the Dillon, Bluey, Dillon era. Good on ya Vic, you might outlive us all. P.S. he still lives in Bondi.

Pete, how do I ask a guy how he got the name “The Rat?” I think because of his large front teeth. South Bondi guys were cruel, but we can handle it! What was your nickname Pete?
